FATAYAT NU
Fatayat Nahdlatul Ulama (Fatayat NU) is a young women’s Islamic organization and one of the autonomous bodies under the auspices of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Fatayat NU was founded in Surabaya on 7 Rajab 1369 H (April 24, 1950 CE) as a platform for young NU women to serve and actively contribute to religious and social development.
The early formation of Fatayat began during NU’s 15th Congress in Surabaya in 1940, when several female students from MTs NU joined the organizing committee together with members of Muslimat NU. From that experience emerged the awareness of the need for a dedicated space for young NU women to organize. Three pioneering and resilient women — Chuzaimah Mansur (Gresik), Aminah Mansur (Sidoarjo), and Murthosiyah (Surabaya) — became known as the “Tiga Serangkai” or “Three Founding Sisters” of Fatayat NU.
With the support of KH Mochammad Dahlan, Fatayat NU gained official recognition through the establishment of the Fatayat NU Executive Board on February 14, 1950, and was later confirmed as an autonomous body of NU during the 18th NU Congress in Jakarta.
Since its establishment, Fatayat NU has been committed to empowering young women through education, training, and social service. Its early programs included literacy campaigns, the founding of educational institutions, and various skills and language courses. The spirit of independence and service has continued to guide Fatayat NU’s movement in nurturing women who are empowered, faithful, and devoted to contributing to the nation.
